The state of the art?
As chatGPT demonstrates, most of the code we will ever need has been written before and could be re-used. Re-use by machine regeneration to new applcations is a very interesting way of achieving this. More wastefully, however, code regeneration will continue to be carried out by humans for at least a little longer: There as there are still substantial issues when integrating any type of code or library into a software project, which is one of the main causes of technical debt as well as causing friction early in development projects. Until we find better wats of integrating software components into reliable maintainable systems, dealing in code of any kind is an expensive recuring engineering cost that should be non-recurring.
